Portuguese Cork

The cork oak forests occupy a vast area around Western Mediterranean Basin, where there are ideal growing conditions. It occupies 23% of the Portuguese forest area which is representing one third of the total world cork oak forests. Portugal is responsible for half of the world’s cork production.
The cork oak plays such an important role in Portugal that at the end of 2011, it was unanimously declared by the Portuguese Parliament to be Portugal's National Tree and has been protected by law since the 13th century.
